Overview
The Open Origin AI data center project is a proposed development located southeast of Marfa, Texas, on an 80,000-acre site currently owned by Texas Mountain Cattle Company.
The facility proposed in Q2 2025 is designed to be powered primarily by on-site solar energy and may include a green ammonia plant to support low-carbon fuel production. However, the proposal has raised concerns among local officials and residents, particularly regarding the potential extraction of up to 800 acre-feet of groundwater annually—more than the current consumption of the entire city of Marfa. This has prompted discussions about water usage, housing availability, infrastructure, and the preservation of Marfa's renowned dark skies.
While the land sale has not been finalized, Open Origin intends to engage with the community as planning continues.
