International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) is an American multinational technology corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, with operations in over 171 countries. The company began their operations in 1911, in Endicott, New York.


IBM produces and sells computer hardware, middleware and software, and provides hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. IBM is also a major research organization, holding the record for most annual U.S. patents generated by a business (as of 2020) for 28 consecutive years.


IBM is one of the world's largest employers, with over 345,000 employees as of 2020. IBM employees have been awarded five Nobel Prizes, six Turing Awards, ten National Medals of Technology (USA) and five National Medals of Science (USA).


In 2014. IBM announced several major partnerships with other tech companies such as Apple Inc, Twitter (X). Facebook (Meta), Tencent. Cisco. Microsoft etc.


In 2015, it announced three major acquisitions, a healthcare company Merge Healthcare for $1bn, data storage vendor Cleversafe and all digital assets from the Weather Company. The same year, the company bought Truven Health Analytics for $2.6bn in 2016 and Red Hat for $34bn which was completed in 2019.


In 2020, IBM announced it was going to divest the Managed Infrastructure Services unit of its Global Technology Services division into a new public company named Kyndrl with a backlog of $60 bn.


Also in 2020, IBM reported $5.6 bn in earnings with an annual revenue of $73.6 bn.


In 2021, its market capitalisation is valued at $127 bn.


IBM has data centre facilities across the world, including US, Europe, Asia and Australia.
