Overview

EDF is the main electricity production and distribution company in France. The company was formed as a public establishment in 1946, following France's post-war efforts of to modernise existing structures and ensure energy sovereignty. The law of April 8 1946 led to the nationalisation of 95% of French private companies of production, transport and distribution of electricity and gas. EDF's three key businesses were established as electricity production and engineering, distribution network management, and sales and trading. In 2000, the subsidiary Réseau de transport d'électricité (RTE) is formed as mainland France’s network transmission operator. In 2004, EDF is listed as a public limited company with the state remaining an 84% majority shareholder. In 2020, rising debt and lowered output from ageing nuclear reactors become acute problems until mid-2022 where profit warnings are issued with half of EDF’s fleet of nuclear reactors shut down from corrosion inspections. Ownership of the remaining shares is offered to the government for 9.7 billion euros, and in June 2023, EDF is delisted form the Paris stock exchange.
