Overview

South Africa stands out as the largest and most advanced data centre hub in Africa, surpassing other countries on the continent. While other nations have only begun constructing hyperscale or colocation retail facilities, South Africa has already reached the point where hyperscaler are building their own self-owned data centres. The country has three data centre hubs: Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. Johannesburg and Cape Town are recognized as major players in the public cloud market, while Durban represents a smaller retail market, contributing just 1% of the nation’s total IT capacity. However, this 1% still surpasses the total IT capacity of many other African countries as of Q4 2024.
