Overview
Zurich is a key business hub for Switzerland, holding 20% of the country's GDP. Zurich holds an even greater proportion of the country's data centre market - with 70% of national power concentrated within the parameters of the 'Zurich' market. It is these parameters, however, that are beginning to increasingly change. Whilst initial data centre development was focused in and around metropolitan Zurich, an increased number of developments are beginning to move further out of town, due to the costs of developing in and closer to the metropolitan area. Capitalising upon reliable grid infrastructure outside of the city, projects are being set up where there is land available.
There are as of yet, perhaps with the slight exception of Lupfig, where we have two larger developments, no clear clusters where developments are occurring outside of the city.
Wholesale colocation dominates what is in the development pipeline, with a number of key players, such as Digital Realty, choosing to focus their business here increasingly. Retail colocation remains strong, however, with Equinix and AtlasEdge proceeding with expansions.
